The Natick Affordable Housing Trust Fund (NAHTF) is seeking community input on accessory dwelling units (ADUs). An ADU is typically an additional living area independent of the primary dwelling that may have been added to, created within, or detached from a primary single-family dwelling. The ADU must provide for living, sleeping, cooking, and bathroom facilities and be on the same parcel as the primary dwelling.
ADUs are frequently in the news of late. The “Affordable Homes Act” proposed by the Healey-Driscoll Administration will allow ADUS less than 900 SF as of right throughout the state with the ability for communities to set some reasonable restrictions. NAHTF is trying to determine how ADUs can be used as part of a toolkit to address local and regional housing shortages and to facilitate the development of more affordable, equitable and diverse housing in Natick.
